Modell’s Sporting Goods Store is the oldest, family owned and operated retailer of sporting goods, athletic footwear, active apparel and fan gear in the United States. They have always been committed to giving us the shopping experience for the athletic and fan in all of us.
The chain was founded by Morris A Modell in 1889 on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan, NYC. He was a Jewish immigrant from Hungry. A family owned business through the years for 4 generations. Today Modell’s operates 152 stores along the North East Coast.
Modell’s Sporting Goods is a traditional shopping experience with the most trusted names in the business. The name Modell’s has stood for the quality, selection, value and best customer service – all backed by dedicated people who go the extra mile to guarantee complete customer satisfaction.
They deliver the extraordinary online shopping, with the support and tradition of over 120 years of retail experience. A lot has changed at Modell’s Sporting Goods over the last century but the total and complete satisfaction of the customer is still the #1 commitment.
They started to expand and now operate stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Road Island, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia as well as Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Their flagship store is still at 42nd Street in the heart of Manhattan at Times Square.
Please take note, that some of the merchandise online is not in the stores and some of the items in the stores are not online. The product selections may vary, due to the nature of some products and limited availability.
Mitchell Modell was featured in Undercover Boss which aired on 11/02/2012. In 2014 Dick’s Sporting Goods accused Modell’s of stealing retail secrets while being undercover in their store.
Mitchell Modell the CEO today is said to be worth about $300 million and his company has a revenue of $875 million a year.
They are looking to be “Your Hometown Sporting Goods Store”, to specialize in offerings for the community to keep relationships and programs going such as Team Weeks, which assist local schools, league’s and non profit organizations.
Modell’s mission statement “Listen, Respect and Respond” to the needs of customers, associates and vendors. They sponsor a lot of sports teams. Such as the New York Yankee’s, the New York Giants, the New York Jets, the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Philadelphia 76er’s, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Washington Capitals, The Washington Nationals, as well as numerous minor league baseball teams.
Over the years things have changed, but they have a commitment to bring complete customer satisfaction in all their retailing.
